| You could finish reading a magazine or two, cover to cover, while waiting for the doctor to see you at most specialists’ clinics. And when you are finally ushered in to meet the doctor after a two-week wait, you are out of the clinic in less than five minutes. Your pocket is lighter by at least Rs 500 and you aren’t even satisfied with the meeting. But the wait may just have got less frustrating thanks to Healthcaremagic.com, a health care website. The website’s Super Specialist Opinion Service, launched last month, offers to put you in touch with a specialist, especially when you’re seeking a second opinion about your health condition. And it costs far lesser than a round to a specialist usually would. The website has a panel of about 18 specialist doctors to choose from, including cardiologists, urologists, orthopaedic surgeons and even oncologists. You can choose a specialist from this list, view the doctor’s profile and send him an email requesting a phone appointment.

| "IIT graduate Kunal Sinha founded Healthcare Magic in Bangalore in February 2008, after selling his software company, TechUnified, the year before. Healthcare Magic allows users to connect with doctors through phone and live Internet chat. It has 34 doctors on its payroll and tie-ups with 150 doctors, and is planning to associate with 400 more. The associate doctors are paid by Healthcare Magic, after collecting patient feedback post the interaction. Sinha says, “We are a business enterprise with a social motive. And that motive is to make health advice accessible to even the remotest corners of the country, where a cell phone is enough to speak to a specialist in a metropolitan hospital.” The company has also tied up with networks like Reliance, Aircel, BPL, Tata and Idea to offer its service through a short code. Healthcare Magic was funded by Accel Partners in early 2009 and has done 2.7 lakh patient interactions so far. "

| "Kauser Ahmed, a real estate consultant in Bangalore, accompanied his diabetic mother to the hospital to ask the dietician for a meal plan, only to be put off by a long waiting list and multiple consultants on leave. Instead, Ahmed sought out HealthcareMagic.com, an online medical service. By the end of the day, following a series of online consultations, his mother had a meal chart designed for her condition. Opting for medical help online is now a familiar routine for 29-year-old Kauser. He seeks advice on a range of issues, from diet and fitness to childcare (he has a nine-month-old baby) through HealthcareMagic’s Rs1,200 annual subscription programme, which offers his family unlimited access (over the Internet or phone) to the panel of 34 doctors working with the Bangalore-based company, which expanded its services to New Delhi earlier this year. | "VC funding: new rules of the game: Showing customer traction also helps while making a pitch to investors, say start-ups. Rx HealthCare Magic Pvt. Ltd, a Bangalore firm that runs a health care portal (www.healthcaremagic.com) highlighted the offline component of the business—offering insurance services—while making a pitch to its investors to demonstrate multiple revenue possibilities. “We showed very openly that we had big names as our B2C customers. VCs are brand-conscious and big names do assure them,” says founder and CEO Kunal Sinha (B2C is short for business-to-consumer, a model referring to consumer-focused businesses). The start-up, which raised $2.5 million from Accel Partners two months ago, approached four VCs before finalizing the deal." | |||
